Planning consent has recently been secured for the deep retrofit of No. 1 Journey Campus in Cambridge.
The building will undergo a comprehensive refurbishment to deliver BREEAM Excellent workspace alongside a purpose-built cycle hub at the heart of Journey Campus. Through an additional storey and rear extension, the scheme will deliver c.28k sq ft of high-quality office space and is expected to start in the second half of 2024.
Sustainability has been a fundamental pillar of the design approach. The refurbishment will retain the existing concreate frame to provide significant embodied carbon savings. There will be a new thermally efficient façade, a substantial 51% water saving per person, as well as new PV panels that form part of an all-electric energy strategy. This holistic approach to sustainability will deliver an energy efficient building with reduced operational carbon.
Biodiversity has also been a key consideration. The proposals achieve a 30% Biodiversity Net Gain. This is made possible through the retention of a significant tree to the rear, new landscaping around the building, green roofs and a new terrace with views across the city.
Journey Campus is situated next to Castle Hill, a stones throw away from one of the city’s best food and drink hubs on Bridge Street and the historic city centre. It is also within walking distance of the many university colleges, departments and the West Cambridge science district. The office space will be arranged over four floors and designed to modern space standards, with a new additional entrance onto Castle Street. Other facilities include showers, changing rooms, lockers, electric bike charging and EV charging.
